The sporting and commercial performances of FC Groningen declined in the 2018/2019 competitive season. Fans did no longer attend the matches and FC Groningen even feared for relegation. This is why FC Groningen asked Hypercube how to turn this tide.
Hypercube has examined various aspects of the organization and the sporting performances of FC Groningen. On the basis of our analyses, it was concluded that better football can be expected from the team. Related to the salaries paid, players either underperformed or FC Groningen paid too much for players who could not make it happen. Hypercube therefore recommended to focus on the labor organization of the club. Especially, the football experts of the club had to improve their performances to improve the football quality. High quality football seemed to be the significant factor for FC Groningen to have their fans attracted to the club again and prevent relegation.
In the winter of 2019, steps were taken to improve. After the winter break, FC Groningen was able to reverse the negative spiral and even participated in the play-offs for European football. The impetus in the winter of 2019, however, is a short-term action that has provided some effects, but must be followed up the coming years. It remains to be seen how things will turn out in the long term.
