THE QUESTION
After FC Emmen was promoted to the Eredivisie for the first time in 2018, the club’s popularity increased. However, the current stadium ‘’De Oude Meerdijk’’ is very outdated, and the quality and capacity do not meet the needs of a club that wants to play in the Eredivisie on a structural basis. Enough reason for FC Emmen to investigate the feasibility of renovating the existing stadium or building a completely new stadium in 2020.
HYPERCUBE’S ADVICE
Hypercube has conducted extensive research into the status of FC Emmen as a football club. The financial situation and the catchment area of the club in terms of location, fans and commercial partners were examined. Different scenarios have been investigated, whereby variations have been made in the stadium (old, renovated, new) and the level at which the club plays (First Division, Eredivisie). The costs and benefits, including the foundation costs and rental income of each scenario, have been worked out in detail. This has shown that both renovation and new construction of the stadium are feasible and justified options.
In addition, the possibilities have been investigated to set up a sports campus around the stadium with space for, for example, a top sports hall, a school and other activities related to sports.
FOLLOW-UP
In 2022, the planning will be developed in more detail. Hypercube is involved in bringing the right parties together and ensures that the necessary processes are set in motion. Hypercube also provides an up-to-date business case to continue monitoring all developments. Planning and implementation will take place in the coming years.
