THE QUESTION

With the introduction of the new public transport payment system, the Vervoerregio Amsterdam and involved operators are looking for a monthly ticket with a geographical component, which is also an attractive offer for travelers in the region in this new situation.

HYPERCUBE’S WORK

We have developed three possible successors. Based on the usage of current monthly and yearly subscription holders, we then tested what an appropriate price level is for these alternatives and what impact this has on these travelers. There is a big difference between the different types of travelers and that requires thorough research aimed at various target groups. Based on these findings, the operators involved have expressed a preference for a variant where travelers can make unlimited use of public transport within a self-chosen corridor. For this variant, in consultation with the operators and authorities involved, a clear number of corridors have been presented that ensure that a suitable alternative to the Randstad Noord Zone subscription continues to exist for the majority of current users. For this subscription, the financial impact for both travelers and the operators involved was then calculated at different price levels. The aim was for the new offer to be an attractive alternative to balance travel for the largest possible percentage of current users of the Randstad Noord Zone subscription.

RESULT AND FUTURE WORK

The transport region and affiliated operators have used the results for internal decision-making regarding the development of a successor to the Randstad Noord Zone subscription, which is expected to become available in the course of 2024.
